Paestum is an ancient city of Magna Grecia called by the founders Poseidonia in honor of Poseidon, but most devoted to Hera and Athena. The extent of his village is still preserved today, enclosed by its walls Greek, as amended in Luke and Roman era. In the past it was also known as Pesto.

It is located in the Campania region in the province of Salerno, as a fraction of the town of Capaccio Paestum, about 30 kilometers south of Salerno (97 km south of Naples).
It is located in the Piana del Sele, near the coast, in the Gulf of Salerno, in the north of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento. In 2015, more than 300,000 attendances were recorded in the archaeological site and museum; 7% more than the previous year.
